How to:
Bring an enjoyable and educational experience to visitors for the summer holidays at this exhibition – Small Car, Big World.

Hence:
An exhibition concept and a plan for housing the150-exhibits display was developed; the environment graphics with display stands and signages were designed in less than 2 months.

By thoroughly understanding the characteristics the 150+ exhibits, measuring the size of exhibits, and combining the characteristics of the exhibition space and various theme areas for children, the overall concept and style of the exhibition was carefully planned and executed.

As most children’s concentration span is rather limited, to engage and entice children to explore and participate during their visit was the one of the key consideration in the design concept.

Taking into consideration the spatial separation and to maximize the traffic flow, the concept of a “Car Carnival” was borned. The immersive theme scenes created a gorgeous and wonderful carnival paradise, which ran through the entire exhibition space. The “road” floor decals were designed to facilitate the traffic flow in the exhibition space as well as divided the different themes with their respective exhibits.

In this car carnival, there were different scenes under different themes and interactive activities to engage the visitors; children and parents could visit each of these “carnival” attractions and participate in the interactive activities. Every activity comprised of surprises and rewards, boosting parent-child interaction.

A car competition scene on the wall with one race track extending from the wall to a race track looking exhibition stand with the soap box car exhibit placed on it. By combining 2D and 3D design, every wall in the exhibition space was utilized and wall graphics were extended onto the 3D exhibit stands to maintain visual coherence. A unique spatial experience complete with a visual feast was created for visitors at the exhibition.

The design details of the entire exhibition were also meticulously planned and executed – the height, look, size and position of the human characters and objects on the wall graphics had to create a friendly rather than an exaggerated atmosphere on the 3 meters high wall. Introductory text about the exhibits and exhibit stands were sized and positioned within children’s line of sight to achieve optimal viewing results.

Visitors were immersed in the imaginative carnival world, aside from learning the history and working principles behind various precious exhibits. Curious children were willing to step closer to cars and their curiosity about the mechanical world were stimulated. Parents and children were able to spend quality time together, at the same time reliving the parents’ childhood, awakening their childlike innocence.
