Fleet of Time
Memorabilia

Commissioned by renowned film director Zhang Yi Bai to design the memorabilia for "Fleet of Time”, one of the top grossing films in China for 2014, based on the Chinese best-selling novel of the same name by Jiu Ye Hui (九夜茴). In addition to the film, the novel has also been adapted into an online drama series.

The story was set in the 1990s/2000s in Beijing, key periods during which China was transformed. It is a coming of age tale of five friends who grow apart over time as they experience high school, college and eventually adulthood. The film, starring an ensemble cast of Eddie Peng, Ni Ni, Zheng Kai, Wei Chen and Zhang Zixuan, was released on December 5, 2014.

Paying homage to the original novel, a box set of four nostalgic ‘books’ that ties in with the story backdrop was created. This concept was considered innovative in the film industry and a first in China where most movie memorabilia comes in individual form of mugs, figurines, or notebook with promotional images. The intention was also to appeal to audience who are fans of the film and novel. Using various design elements and integration of movie-related materials, the gist of the film was translated and essence of the nostalgia concept into tangible useful items. This memorabilia of limited edition came with 2014 serialized copies and is a winner of Red Dot Design Award, Graphis Award, International Design Award, A’Design Award and Hermes Creative Award.

Within the ‘books’ are stationery – a poster that can be used as a wrapping paper on its reverse side, bookmarks, stickers, sticky notes, postcards, notebook and a 2015 calendar. This idea referenced back to the film setting where stationeries are part and parcel of school days.

Besides being practical items, these ‘writable’ materials allow one to personalize with their own content. The ability to let one project their memories makes this memorabilia even more meaningful.

An interesting element of this memorabilia is the usage
of the script, which are subtly embodied into the stationery set along with the film’s still photos. Following the concept of reminiscence, the 2015 calendar includes the director’s note looking back at key milestones of the movie production during 2014.
